Like one giant hug, the glow of the sun brings healing to my body. With squinted eyes and face pointed upward I let its infinite arms enfold around me. I linger long. My limbs relax and tense shoulders collapse. I smile generously.
After an exhaustively bitter Winter, the sun forces people outside. I hear children’s laughter, stay-at-home moms exchanging empathetic stories of poo poo and pee pee and “you wouldn’t believe what Johnny did last night” mouth fulls.
Lawn mowers come alive and the smell of gasoline and smoke billows. Tree branches crunch. Dirty garages are swept. The bells of princess bicycles echo about while ice cream trucks circle the neighborhood anticipating the sound of “oh mommy, please!”
Life. Energy. Fun. Smiles.
But would I really be able to enjoy the warmth of the sun, without the rain? Would it be possible to relish in the enjoyment of mountain top experiences if not for some darkness and pain? I don’t think so. The sun would get old. I would get complacent. Most likely, I’d take the good times for granted. So on days like today, when the clouds roll in, the sun cannot be found and the chill of gloom and darkness fill the air, it causes me to stop. To reflect. My soul is stirred up.
I love the sun, but these days aren’t so bad. It forces me to take a break. To rest. To pray. If my life were always go go go, happy happy joy joy, I would burn out for sure!
Thank you Jesus, for the rain. Thank, sweet Savior, for wrapping your infinite arms around me, in these times, more than the sun could ever do!
