Raising Pure Children In A Sex-Driven World

July 15, 2013 by Traci

How do we raise pure children in a sex-driven world?  Is the answer to stop having children because the world is just getting worse?  Stopping the good for the sake of the bad does not make the bad any better, but the good less.

How do we protect our children from sex in commercials, sex on billboards, sex in our schools and even sex in children’s clothing lines?

I don’t think God is surprised by anything.  He gives us the wisdom and direction from His Word, and expects us to obey.  We always benefit when we heed wise counsel, and listen.  What are some things we can do as parents to raise God-fearing, pure children in a sex-driven world?

1) Don’t be afraid to say no.
No does not mean you love your kids less, it means that you want better for them.  Then will understand later, and they will thank you.

2) Don’t be afraid to do things different.
Just because Susie’s parents buy her ipads, iphones and a television in her bedroom, does not mean you need to.

3) Have the hard talks.
When it is time, you be the one that talks to your children about their bodies being their own.

4) Limit screen time.
Limit what your children watch.  Consider parental controls and monitor what they watch.

5) Just say no to sleep overs.
My parents hardly ever let us sleep over people’s houses.  There’s nothing good that can ever happen after dark.  Too much mischief.  Too much temptation and exploration can occur.

6) Show affection to your children.
Love your children well.  Show them that you truly care for them in the purest of ways.  If they don’t receive affection from you, they might just look elsewhere.

7) Give them parents who are head over heels for each other.
Love your spouse well.  Give them the security of a home where Mom and Dad kiss often, are playful, and are head over heels for each other.

8) Be an engaged parent when it comes to school.
Home schooling is a great option, but if it’s not a fit for your family (like ours) be an engaged parent.  Watch and listen and pay attention to what the school system is teaching your child.  If you don’t like what you see, make the necessary changes.

9) Teach them about modesty from a young age.
Sunday mornings are a great teaching moment.  If your daughter comes out with a low cut shirt or shorty-short-shorts… allow this to be at time to teach her about modesty and how to respect our bodies.

10) Memorize scripture together as a family.
Hiding God’s word in our hearts is the number one protection again the enemy!  Do it individually and practice it as a family!  Some great scriptures about purity you might like to memorize in your family:

Psalm 24:4

He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who has not lifted himself up to falsehood or to what is false, nor sworn deceitfully.
Psalm 51:2

Wash me thoroughly [and repeatedly] from my iniquity and guilt and cleanse me and make me wholly pure from my sin!
Psalm 119:140

Your word is very pure (tried and well refined); therefore Your servant loves it.
Proverbs 5:15

Drink waters out of your own cistern [of a pure marriage relationship], and fresh running waters out of your own well.
Proverbs 20:11

Even a child is known by his acts, whether [or not] what he does is pure and right.
Proverbs 21:8

The way of the guilty is exceedingly crooked, but as for the pure, his work is right and his conduct is straight.
2 Corinthians 11:3

But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.
Philippians 4:8

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
2 Timothy 2:22

So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.
Titus 2:5

to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
Hebrews 10:22

let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
James 3:17

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.
