DAY 2: Simple Ways To Create Memories

October 2, 2013 by Traci

Most of my memories as a child come rising to the surface through scent, time of year, or music.  I know it’s corny, but I always get a lump in my throat when the first Christmas music is played throughout my home.  Here are some simple ways for you and your family to create memories:

Start Now. Don’t worry about creating the perfect memories. Sometimes the simplest of activities are the most memorable!  It’s all about creating “firsts” together as a family.

They Won’t Be Perfect. Memories may not be perfect the first time we are up to bat.  I’m sure you’ve been there where you are trying to create a lasting memory (like family pictures) of which turns into one big crying mess!  Remember, simple is best and your family will remember more the feeling they got during the memory making, not the actual event itself.  Memories are etched into minds when they are meaningful and filled with love.

Be Intentional.  Sometimes it is just the intentional things we do each and every day that create lasting memories.  Like the sweet things we say (phrases and nick names) or bedtime routines.  I love how my sweet four year old boy likes to “smell me” as I lean down to kiss his cheek and tuck him in at night.  He’s helping create memories for me, as the Mama, and he doesn’t even know it!

Create Your Own.  Think back to what was special for you as a child.  What could you do a little different with your family?  Put your own spin on it.

Start A Memory Idea Jar.   Grab a mason jar and title it “future memories”.  When ideas pop into your head, write them on a piece of paper and  place them in the jar.  When the time arises, pull one out and give it a whirl!

Pick A Family Activity.  For some families this may look like a sporting activity, board game, or hobby.  Find something that you all learn to enjoy together.

Be Spontaneous.  Sometimes last minute surprises like waking the kids up after they’ve gone to bed, and taking a drive looking at Christmas lights is the best kind of memory to create!

Picture Taking.  There’s no greater way to create lasting memories than to capture them through picture taking.  You don’t have to be a professional photographer to capture special moments.  Creating photo books through sites like Shutterfly is a great idea.

Values & Beliefs.  Values and beliefs taught each day will promote kindness and friendship among family members.  Positive interaction is key; if a family can’t stand being around one another, they aren’t likely to be creating many memories.  Strong families are built on a foundation of God’s love (1 John 4:19).  Remember, love takes work, and so will memory making; they both grow over time.

The Gift of Time.  Give your children one-on-one attention.  Take them on a father-daughter date, or a mommy-son date.  Just simple, dedicated attention makes the best memories.  My daughter and I have a special Mommy-daughter love journal that we write back and forth to one another in.  This is a great way to connect over time.

Your turn:  What do you do as a family to create simple memories?  I’d love to hear.

Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue, a gentle b Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue,
a gentle breeze blows through fresh, new blooms.
Your time is fleeting, yet faithful,
a promise of beauty each spring.

Gifting petals that fall to the earth,
You are waiting for me to visit you.
Basking beneath warm shadows,
Deeply breathing in nature’s favorite perfume.

A legacy of faithful promise,
Graceful, elegant, familiar and kind.
As the sun streams through branches,
Your reflection twinkles and twirls,
Leaving your dance card upon my heart.

You whisper, come linger a little longer,
No need to be in such a rush.
Through storm clouds, torrential rain,
and those picture perfect days,
You continue your steady climb toward the heavens.

Your limbs grow stronger, your roots deeper still.
Your humble beauty speaks for itself.
No need to shout, nor beg for attention.
You hold the secrets of many who return year after year,
Who sit beneath your branches,
and find healing to bloom as well.
