Homemade Laundry Soap and Natural Beauty Recipes I Can’t Wait To Try!

April 20, 2010 by Traci

Natural Facial Cleanser
(oil cleansing method: OCM)

The most popular blend uses castor oil and extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO).
The castor oil draws out dirt and other yucky stuff from your pores. Ahhhhhhh!
The EVOO is an excellent moisturizer, helping heal and nourish the skin.
Recipe (Experiment to find your own blend based on your skin type):

NORMAL SKIN:  One-to-one ratio of castor oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

ACNE-PRONE SKIN: Three parts castor oil to one part EVOO.

DRY SKIN: One part castor oil to three parts EVOO.

Just start off with a little bit, and then try it for a few days.  Suggestion: You may like to begin with one teaspoon of castor oil and three teaspoons of EVOO in a little squeeze bottle.

1.  Mix the oils together in a small bottle, give it a little shake, and you’ve got yourself a homemade, frugal facial cleanser!

2.  Pour a quarter-sized amount into your palm, rub your hands together, and slowly massage your skin with your fingertips. Don’t splash your face with water first — apply it dry. Work the oil into your skin for about a minute, and enjoy the peaceful massage at work. Don’t scrub — just rub.

3. Steam your face by wetting a washcloth with hot water (but not scalding!), and put it over your face until it’s about room temperature. This is steaming out your pores, removing the impurities and the dead skin cells. It’ll take about a minute — enjoy the nearly-free facial.

4. Wipe off the oil by taking the washcloth and rinsing and wringing it out. Then, gently wipe off the oil. Your skin will probably feel softer immediately.

***Some Immediate Benefits You Might See***

  • Your skin will feel softer and look a bit brighter.
  • It won’t feel tight, but it won’t be greasy, either.
  • Olive oil has the same pH as human skin (it’s the perfect cleansing balancer)
  • It works great to remove makeup!  And much cheaper than any store-bought brand!
  • You probably won’t need to do this more than one time per day (before bed).

Banana Hair Mask
1. 3 ripe bananas
2. 3 tsp honey
3. Blend two ingredients together

  • Brush your hair thoroughly! You are about to put some fruit and honey in those locks, so the few tangles the better!
  • Take an “egg size” amount and massage into roots around hair line
  • Move backwards across your hair gradually.
  • Cover head with shower cap/plastic bag.
  • Let sit for 15-30 minutes.
  • Wash out thoroughly, or you may attract some pesky creatures from your neighborhood.
When I heard that my cousin Jami told her sister (my other cousin) Kari about this, I thought it might be a cruel prank.  But in fact, it worked!  Some proof:

Make Your Own Laundry Detergent
(Cost – 1 Penny / Load)

1. Soap: Fels Naptha (old fashioned soap)

2. Washing Soda: **not baking soda** Brand- Arm & Hammer
    Purpose: remove dirt and odors.

3. Borax: (a naturally occurring mineral, Sodium Borate)
    Purpose: whitener/deoterizer

Recipe: Homemade Laundry Soap

1/3 bar Fels Naptha soap
1/2 cup Washing Soda
1/2 cup Borax Powder
Small Bucket (2 Gallon approx)

Grate the soap and put it in a sauce pan.  Add 6 cups water and heat until the soap melts.  Add washing soda and the borax.  Stir until dissolved.  Remove from heat.  Pour 4 cups hot water into the bucket.  Now add your soap mixture and stir.  Add 1 gallon plus 6 cups of water and stir.  Let the soap sit for about 24 hours and it will gel (a watery gel- “egg noodle soup” look).  Use 1/2 cup/load.

This soap is low sudsing, so don’t be alarmed.  It is a misconception that the suds do the cleaning.  It is, in fact, the ingredients.

Optional scent additive:  1/2 – 1 ounce essential oil/fragrance oil of your choice.  I am not going to add this, since my children have very sensitive skin.

Will it save me some cash?

Fels Naptha Bar of Soap: $1.12 for a 5.5 oz bar (.40/batch)
Washing Soda: $2.23 for a 55 oz box (2.23/55= .17/batch)
Borax: $3.27 for a 76 oz box.  (.14 cents/batch)

= .71 for 2 gallons of laundry detergent!

2 gallons = 64 (1/2 cup) loads, =  1 Penny/Load!

** please note **  if you have “serious dirt” to clean off your clothes, you may want to add a scoop of Oxyclean to your load.

Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue, a gentle b Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue,
a gentle breeze blows through fresh, new blooms.
Your time is fleeting, yet faithful,
a promise of beauty each spring.

Gifting petals that fall to the earth,
You are waiting for me to visit you.
Basking beneath warm shadows,
Deeply breathing in nature’s favorite perfume.

A legacy of faithful promise,
Graceful, elegant, familiar and kind.
As the sun streams through branches,
Your reflection twinkles and twirls,
Leaving your dance card upon my heart.

You whisper, come linger a little longer,
No need to be in such a rush.
Through storm clouds, torrential rain,
and those picture perfect days,
You continue your steady climb toward the heavens.

Your limbs grow stronger, your roots deeper still.
Your humble beauty speaks for itself.
No need to shout, nor beg for attention.
You hold the secrets of many who return year after year,
Who sit beneath your branches,
and find healing to bloom as well.
