My husband has always loved cars. Sports cars to be exact. He dreams about having his own Summer car one day. Each time he talks about it, that goofy grin is painted all over his face, front and center. I , on the other hand, have flashbacks of Tim the Toolman Taylor, working for years on his car in the garage.
What’s my reaction whenever this topic comes up? I roll my eyes, giggle, and shrug it off as a wasted dream. Would it be wise to get a sports car, with two little toddlers running around? Probably not. Is it a waste of money? Probably.
But instead of rolling my eyes, and downplaying his dream of a sports car, what if I shared in his excitement (just a bit)? “Yeah Babe, that would be really fun one day. What is it about cars that you love so much?”
I know that this is a silly example. But we all do it as wives, right? What hobbies is your husband passionate about? Do you, like me, shrug it off as a waste of time?
I was thinking today, if I squander his dream of Summer’s spent driving down the road with his future Red Dodge Viper’s top down, what else do I squander without realizing it?
My sweet friend Courtney, over at Women Living Well, has had some Summer Marriage Challenges for us ladies. This week, it’s supporting his vision for your family.
July 26 – Support his vision. Discuss his vision for your family. Where does he see your family in 1 year, 5 years, and 10 years. Share with us how you let your husband lead.
Other ways that I do support his dreams and vision for our family (besides red sports cars…. wink wink ) are:
- Sitting down and evaluating our finances together.
- Having heart to heart discussions about the way we discipline our children.
- Supporting new opportunities for growth at his workplace.
- Open to the possibility of moving one day and starting over in a new, unknown place.
I need to remember that my husband NEEDS me to support him. This means TRUSTING him to make wise decisions for our family. Do I think that he is always making a right choice? No. But I need to show (verbally and by action) that I trust him to lead.
Like sports cars, what is one silly dream that your husband has that you (like me) roll your eyes at in silly fun? Maybe consider sharing in all of his dreams and visions… even the ones that we, as wives, think are petty and meaningless. They need to know that we are their #1 cheerleader; in all areas of life.
