I got my first Barbie Doll when I was 21 years old. That’s right… 21. It was totally a joke, since I never had any growing up. My Mom always said she didn’t like them. I always wondered why I never got any at birthday parties. Maybe she put a secret disclaimer inside the invites in big bold letter, “NO BARBIE DOLLS PLEASE“.
In case you think she was going a little overboard, I did play with them. At all of my friends houses.
To this day, I’m not sure of the exact reason why she never let me have any. But maybe they are the same reasons why I won’t buy them for my daughter?
1) The ability to undress dolls that have very profound features/body parts.
2) The whole Barbie-Ken imagery.
3) The fact that Barbie is totally not proportioned correctly (okay, maybe I’m a tad bit jealous).
4) I don’t want my daughter to develop an obsession with material things (clothes, cars, accessories, etc).
Now, some of these reasons might seem a little drastic. Truth be told, I’m not sure why I don’t support the Billion Dollar Industry… I just don’t. Can’t put my finger on it.
