How To Create Life-Changing Friendships

September 3, 2009 by Traci

Girls’ giddy laughter echoed from across the dew-kissed lawn; we slid down into our down bags for sleeping, the tops tucked snug around our neck to protect the warmth we’d found.

Crickets hummed their melodious tune, a dog barked and his friend howled back; darkness encamped the crisp night.

We were all on a journey together, traveling across the country. The arrangements were nothing to write home about by any means; a crowded bus with a bunch of not-so-sweet-smelling teenagers. Sleeping on hard ground, mosquito-bitten flesh;

but our hearts were united in purpose, in hope.

Our enduring adventure led us to a housing project in Dallas, Texas; 1996, was the year. It was the largest low-income projects that Dallas had seen.

Our bodies weary from a long journey, souls grasping for strength from the Word, we huddled together on blazing blacktop and prayed; prayed for little lives to be changed as we served together putting on a Sport’s Camp Vacation Bible School.

There was no time to think about our hair or makeup; for it was permanently matted to our scalp and caked to our faces.

Young, precious little ones (sometimes 6 at a time), would surround me. One on my lap, another arms clasped around my neck, and a few more trying to push their way in.

You’re my Mommy; NO, she’s MY Mommy, they would scream out.

It wasn’t just me; it was our whole team! A team of teenagers from Rochester, NY; traveling together with a united purpose to serve the Lord together.

These are some of my fondest memories of TRUE FRIENDSHIP.
Serving the Lord and sharing the gospel together to a lost and dying world!

Iron was heated in a fiery furnace; and it sharpened and changed another; a dull piece of scrap metal was edged away and continued the process; over and over.

Real, life-changing friendships are made when people of like-faith serve together with a purified purpose.

Proverbs 27:17

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”
