For Christmas, my sweet mommy (yes, at 30 year’s old, I still call her mommy) got me a Joann’s gift card for a cake decorating class. I’m so thrilled to finally be able to take one of these classes!
I opted for Course 2 (Flowers & Borders), where I will learn flower-making methods, basket weave, rope border and other fun techniques! Wooo hoo!
I have taught myself by following instructions, getting some of my own supplies, and food coloring gel.
These are some of the cakes that I’ve made for my kid’s birthdays:
Butterfly Cake (Riley’s 1st Birthday)
Princess Castle Cake (Riley’s 2nd Birthday)
Merry Go Round Cake (Riley’s 3rd Birthday)
Noah’s Ark Cake (Carson’s 1st Birthday)

If you want to start on your own, like I did, here are my suggestions:
1) Get a good set of decorating tips (metal) and plastic couplers:
2) Get a few reusable decorating bags and food coloring gels:
3) Pick up a beginner’s cake decorating book.
4) Follow the step-by-step instructions and make a practice cake.
5) I get a boxed cake mix and make my own butter cream frosting.
6) Have fun! If you don’t have any interest in doing it, don’t!
