We have become thrill seekers. I have become a seeker of thrills. The mundane moments threaten boredom and I look for excitement. Where do we seek thrills?
In people.
In places.
In things.
In life-events.
Isn’t that why we have become a nation obsessed with reality television? Perhaps. We can watch other people scale mountains, eat crazy, exotic foods, and do silly things in the name of entertainment.
Do we do that with our online community? Are we seeking a response? Do we secretly desire our blog posts to go viral? For what? Fame is fleeting and brings death with it.
So I ask myself this morning, why am I bored with the mundane? Why am I not content with my dirty flip flops and the cool breeze on my face?
It is because I have lost my view. Perspective. I have become discontented. I am comparing my life, my home, my body to what others are doing and have. To what the world says is acceptable and worthy of praise.
Be very careful when you go seeking for a thrill; when your God-ordained day doesn’t satisfy the soul. It is there, in that place, where the weeds of the world will clutch your soul and drag it down into the mud until you can’t breathe. You may even compromise more than you ever thought you would… find your life again. Stop seeking and ask Him to place that contentment back into your soul… and breathe!
Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor; and this was my portion from all my labor.
11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.
