10 Reasons Why Women Should Avoid Gossip

February 25, 2011 by Traci

It can be very tricky when it comes to gossip.  Oftentimes, I can start out with pure intentions… “please pray for so and so” but then I find myself getting caught up in the drama of it all.  Pride sets in.  If you notice yourself anticipating telling that friend something about someone else, BEWARE!  Notice the red flags of conviction and don’t get caught up in the thrill of your own pride.  It will only bring destruction.  Heed the truths below.

10 Reasons Why Women Should Avoid Gossip

1. Seek To Be A Faithful Friend:  Proverbs 11:13- A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.  Are you a faithful friend?  Do you have other’s best interests at heart?

2. A Wise Tongue Is Healthy:  Proverbs 12:18- There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.  A gossip is very unbecoming.  If you are known to be a gossip, change your ways.  It will hurt your health otherwise.

3. It Wounds On The Inside: Proverbs 18:8- The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.  It will not only hurt the person you are gossiping about, but others and yourself!

4. You Will Reap The Consequences:  Proverbs 18:21- Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.  Your words will come back to bite you.  Choose words of grace and mercy.

5. It Will Give You A Troubled Life:  Proverbs 21:23- Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.  You can avoid trouble by not getting caught up in gossip (as the source, AND the receiver of the gossip).

6. God Says Not To!  Proverb 25:9-  Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another.  God’s instruction is clear here.  It is for our benefit and His glory.

7. Stop Strife Before It Begins:  Proverbs 26:20- Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.  If you don’t provide the wood, the fire can’t start.

8. Speak Kindness:  Proverbs 31:26- She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.  The godly woman will speak words of pure kindness.

9. Peace Results In Pleasant Relationships: Psalm 133:1- Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!  Avoiding gossip brings pleasantness and peace.

10. You Will Be Blessed: Matthew 5:9- Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.  God will bless you for your obedience.

Oh my goodness Traci, this post touches home for me in so many ways. I have been tremendously hurt by the power of gossip. Gossip was thrown at me to the point where my children were taken from me. The legal system believed the gossip over the truth. It took me a year to clear that gossip and prove myself innocent, along with tons of money. What a rough year….And the woman that did this to me, she claims to be a Christian. I sit in the same sanctuary with her every Sunday. I don’t think she has been listening to the sermons. What do you think?
If you don’t mind, I would like to share your post with others.

I am doing a study on the book of James and right now on the verses of taming the tongue. Gossip really does hurt, but seems so easy to get caught up in. I liked your point about sharing a prayer request and then it turning into gossip as well. If we aren’t careful sometimes our best intentions turn into out of control speaking.
Thanks for sharing the 10 points and backing up with scripture it is always nice to know where to turn. And great to have the resources when sharing.

I think we all know what we should do and say, but sometimes we stray. Thanks for the reminder to “bridle our tongues” in order to preserve the dignity of ourselves and those around us.

This is the best post I read today! we ought to be very careful, and not be busybodies and gossiping! I wonder if we as homemakers, could be better with this issue if, we would be busier at home dong our job, rather then wondering about looking for what others are doing???

Yeah, it’s quite easy to get roped into it and add just that amount of fuel to the gossip news. It’s the same when telling lies, right? So and so person is this and that when in reality, those supposed “facts” were untrue. If one person told a lie and it was repeated through the grapevine so frequently it turns into a “truth” much to the detriment of the person at the end of the gossip.

Thank you, Traci, for this post. I agree, gossip infects relationships and has the potential to really hurt others. As women we must be careful and examine our motives prior to saying anything to anyone about anyone. If the Holy Spirit gives the go ahead, then share innocently and honestly. If not, we must let the information die on the vine.

Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue, a gentle b Blushing with your delicate, rosy hue,
a gentle breeze blows through fresh, new blooms.
Your time is fleeting, yet faithful,
a promise of beauty each spring.

Gifting petals that fall to the earth,
You are waiting for me to visit you.
Basking beneath warm shadows,
Deeply breathing in nature’s favorite perfume.

A legacy of faithful promise,
Graceful, elegant, familiar and kind.
As the sun streams through branches,
Your reflection twinkles and twirls,
Leaving your dance card upon my heart.

You whisper, come linger a little longer,
No need to be in such a rush.
Through storm clouds, torrential rain,
and those picture perfect days,
You continue your steady climb toward the heavens.

Your limbs grow stronger, your roots deeper still.
Your humble beauty speaks for itself.
No need to shout, nor beg for attention.
You hold the secrets of many who return year after year,
Who sit beneath your branches,
and find healing to bloom as well.
