I get it.
The marriage thing.
It’s all super dreamy and fault-free early on, and then our true self rises up and we fight before church, and our pride gets the best of us as we are trying to dress ourselves, and three kids, and the stress level is high, and the baby is crying for no reason, so you squirt some meds in his mouth, and then he spits it back out onto his nice clean shirt, of which you have no time to change because you are already running late.
That’s when the true colors of our flesh coming streaming out in ugly words.
Being a marriage partner takes continual work. Then add children into the mix, and it needs even more work.
Most marriage problems occur over time. Little annoyances, that turn into bigger ones that eventually can breed bitterness and resentment towards the spouse you once loved.
That is why we need to fight for our marriage early on before we wake up one day and realize that our marriage needs fixing.
Because in reality, it needs daily maintenance and proactive tender care. It’s when we get lazy, and our pride grows leaps and we forget to forgive, and want our own way more than dying to self and loving for the sake of unconditional devotion.
Marriage sometimes lacks the butterflies. Like after you have a baby, and your whole world turns upside down.
The stretch marks. The lack of sleep. The one trillion poopy diapers and midnight feedings and snoring spouse and smelly morning breath. It’s not always pretty.
But it is pretty special!
So do the work today.
Lay down your pride.
Work at forgiving well.
Practice saying I’m sorry.
When you do mess up, and say mean words, forgive quick and full and free. Don’t hold onto any part of it. Don’t you save pieces of hurt that you can string along and unravel for future ammunition.
Work on being best friends every day. Even the days that are ugly, and long and just plain hard. Work through the hard days, together. Those are the days that will strengthen your marriage resolve. Remember you are on the same team. Laugh together, and even at one another’s silly quirks and failures. Inside jokes are great. Laughter can mend and medicate the wounds that threaten to separate. It’s like a beautiful salve for the marriage bed.
So spend time fighting for your marriage today and everyday. Before it needs fixing. Because if you don’t fight for your marriage early on, you’ll be fighting against it later on.
