Many may argue that being fashion-savvy is sinful. We should not be so concerned about beauty and the outward appearance after all! Let’s be very careful of legalism! I do agree that the Bible does warn us about being consumed with outward beauty alone.
1 Peter 3:3-4 says, Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
Proverbs 31:30 says, Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.
1 Samuel 16:7 says, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
How I View Fashion
1) Adorn the inner person, the hidden person of the heart first. (The Key To Being Beautiful Post)
2) Don’t let it consume you.
3) Don’t let it become a contentment issue. Hebrews 13:5
4) Don’t let it be the focal point of your day/life.
5) Have fun with fashion. Let it be an art, and leave it at that.
6) Just because the world says it’s fashionable, doesn’t mean it is.
7) Hold up your standards against the Word of God first. He is the artist and He alone dictates what is true beauty.
8) Be you! Don’t be so concerned about keeping up with the trends that you forget that God made you unique.
9) There is nothing wrong with outer beauty if you let your inner beauty shine brightest! Don’t forget your #1 outfit should be your armor! Ephesians 6:11
10) God never expected us to be frumpy and wear brown potato sacks. It’s okay to like nice things and dress beautiful. God created women with an innate desire to feel beautiful. (26 Ways To Feel Pretty)
Fashion Resources:
What I Wore Wednesday posts are very popular. People all across the internet post their fashion tips and outfits for the week. At first I was a little leery about doing this, but it’s all in fun and there is no harm in it. Here are some of my past posts here.
Pinterest is also a great way to pick up fun fashion tips.
Fashion & Faith is a great site for ladies who love Jesus and fashion.
The Evolution Of The Swimsuit The evolution of the swimsuit, by Jessica Rey. This gives me a lot to think about. True beauty isn’t about covering up our bodies because they are bad, but letting our dignity shine brightest.

This is such a great post! Fashion is something that has just become a hobby to me. Instead of swimming or knitting or whatever, I have so much fun with fashion and with my blog.

Great post, really! I have often thought about this, specially because I kinda am a fashion/beauty/style blogger. But my main point in even blogging about it is not how much you have or what trends you follow but putting yourself together to feel confident and ready to conquer your day. There is nothing wrong, like you say, with feeling beautiful! God created us that way, anyway!

I love that Evolution of the Swimsuit piece! And the idea that fashion should be like art. I like it to be fun!

I struggle with this, as I do the WIWW posts every week. Sometimes I wonder if it causes me to spend way too much time and mental energy on what I wear, when I could be focused on more heavenly minded endeavors. But I keep coming back to the fact that I have fun with it, and my readers seem to enjoy it, and so many middle aged women have said how much those posts have helped them feel more confident and I guess that’s a good thing! So yeah, I would agree with you that it is all about maintaining the proper perspective. Thanks for the food for thought!

Thanks for sharing this. We were just talking on Sunday about not letting anything be your source of fulfillment other than God. Blogging is a fun hobby, but it should definitely just be that.

This is a great post and something I’ve struggled with as well. I’ve really felt God’s favor and blessing on my blog yet have wondered why when it seems like superficial content at times. I’ve always tried to keep it in perspective too as a creative outlet.

Thanks lady! Interesting food for thought in terms of how far we go in celebrating fashion as Christian women. I definitely check myself in how flashy I dress and the intentions behind what i put on in the morning. ESPECIALLY at church. So hard when you’re single to not look at church as another opportunity to have fun with your fashion but obviously not the place for it. It’s something we constantly should think about. Thanks for bringing it to light! Xx

This is such a great post, Traci! I have written about something similar (how can I appreciate fashion and also be kingdom-minded at the same time?). It’s definitely something to think about and be aware of and also something to pray about. I never want my love of fashion to come across as superficial, so it’s definitely been important for me to think about fashion as something fun, but not a huge part of my life!

I can see where you are going with fashion and Christianity and reference to beauty within and not to adorn etc … But what is your view on some of the progressive Christian T-Shirts that are our there that kids between 19-25 are wearing? They are not reserved in their design, but they do promote the word and have positive Christian messages. What are your thoughts on these Christian T-Shirts?
