It is so important to memorize scripture. I know the benefits. I have experienced the power. Why don’t I do it more? Hmmm.
His Word is powerful. Quick. Sharper than a two edged sword. It pierces deep, even into the joints and marrow. It is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of our heart. Hebrews 4:12
Every time I read Psalm 119 I’m blessed. It is filled to the brim with practical truth and encouragement. That is why I want to commit it to memory. Hide it in my heart. Be able to call on its richness wherever I am. I know what you are thinking… It’s so long! That is why I will work on it 8 verses at a time.
Did you know:
Psalm 119 is broken down into 22 sections of 8 verses. Each begins with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. How cool is that!
Some tips when memorizing scripture:
1. Read each verse, over and over
2. Write it out, over and over
3. Sing the words to a familiar tune (this is a great way to commit scripture to memory)
4. Carry around 8 verses at a time, written on an index card. Memorize them in the car, when you are waiting in line, when your hands are deep in sudsy warmth, or even when you are in the shower (just make sure to laminate the paper, hehe). Be creative!
So, who wants to join me? It may take a whole year, I know. But, it may not take that long. I would LOVE to hear of the blessings that are coming from hiding this nugget of scripture in your heart.
I have this scripture in a Word doc. that I would be happy to send to you.
I would suggest cutting out each section of 8 verses, and taping it onto a piece of construction paper, or large index card.

You are ever so sweet to stop by and comment on my blog all the time…life seems crazy for me and my family these days. I really need to get to blogging more. There is so much going on that is good as well as difficult.
Psalm 119 has so many wonderful sections that speak to the heart, you are right. Taking up memorizing the whole thing is daunting, but well worth it. I would love to join you.
I’ve been meaning to e-mail you.
Blessings,
Trish

OK, so I really want to do this with you, but I’m kinda scared to commit to it. I’m afraid I won’t be successful. I know the benefits of ‘hiding His word in my heart’ so I shouldn’t hesitate. Ok, count me in.

Have you posted this at 516 Gals? You should if you haven’t!! 🙂
I think I might want to join in…Psalm 119 is my most favorite Psalm and may even be my favorite chapter of the whole Bible! And I DO need to memorize scripture and they DO say to pick something that is important to you…so what more confirmation do I need?!?!? THANK YOU! 🙂

I know I am a little late but I only found your post today. I have been memorizing scripture in a way that Ann over at Holy Experience suggested. At first I thought it would not work but it worked amazing. Instead of explaining it all here I will link you to my blog entry where I explain it. There is a great website to help you too. I think your Be Blessed community could really benefit from it.

I finished Psalm 91 in about a month and it was easy. I am still refreshing my memory at Memverse every few days. I have moved onto Psalm 27. Maybe I will join your group when I am done those!
